This Stable-stave has a thin 1mm piece of flat hickory sandwiched in between the stave shell and stave re-ring

This piece is enough to add a significant amount of strength to the shell but the elasticity of Hickory allows the shell to expand/contract without any restriction if its exposed to any major humidity changes.
